Davar4: Introduction |
Davar4 is a free tool for your Scripture Studies. The Program is designed to be intuitive and easy to use and offers features which can help you study Scriptures in a more effective way.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH DAVAR4:
Browse books | Open all the books which you need to see parallel texts from. All texts are synchronized and browsing the texts is very fast. You can navigate the text by scrolling, mouse wheel, keyboard or listing references from the combo box. You can use the toolbar pop-up menu to list the book-chapter-verse (new) |
Display what you need | Many of the modules are not just plain text, but also contain various sorts of extra information (TAGS). Tags can mark e.g., translator notes, unused words in the original text, words of Jesus highlighted, references, Strong's numbers, morphology ... You can easily select and display the information that is important for you. |
Be focused on the original languages! | One of the main purposes of Davar4 is to help you to understand Hebrew and Greek. There are many modules written in the original languages. Davar4 was rewritten to Unicode, to support any language, for example Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. (new) There is support for Hebrew and Greek Strong numbers in the text of books and lexicons. Hebrew and Greek fonts are included. Tables of Hebrew and Greek characters will help you to "type" with the mouse. One click calculation of Hebrew and Greek gematria (numerical values). |
Use lexicons and dictionaries | Just one click of an unknown word will explain its meaning in the lexicon or translate it if you have a dictionary opened. There are modules with Hebrew and Greek lexicons as well as English Biblical lexicons, references and encyclopedias. Also "classical" tools like, Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, are available. Combine various information together – open many lexicons, commentaries and translations to get a "Bigger Picture" about the topic which you are studying. |
New kind of modules: Writings (new) |
Davar 4 introduced the writings module. You can imagine it as an "universal module", similar to the current lexicon. Keywords can be references (book-chapter-verse) or words (latin based, Hebrew or Greek), Strong#, values of gematria or other. The file format is flexible and data is stored as an standard SQLite3 file. That is an easy way to open a module in many database programs, if needed. |
User notes (new) |
This is the next new type of module. It is very similar to writings. The main purpose is to write notes for references. When browsing books, notes to particular reference are displayed. When the button Add/Edit note is pressed, a two-window editor of notes is displayed. The bottom window is for typing the text and the upper window is to preview the note. It is possible to insert various tags into a note (references, Strong#, gematria#, URL) and affect the formatting (bold, italic, upper index) of the text. It is also possible to combine Latin, Hebrew and Greek texts together. Again, data is stored as an standard SQLite3 file. |
Search for what you need | Davar4 has great and powerful search abilities in books, lexicons, writings and notes: |
Information is linked | Davar4 always tries to synchronize all opened windows (if they are not disabled). This means that clicking any Hebrew, Greek or English word will synchronize all opened windows that have information about the word. This works also for references, Strong # and gematria#(new). |
Work with lists of verses | This tool lets you create a list of verses from the results of the search. Lists can be Saved to and Opened from file. Verses can be added manually. The verse list has two independent windows for both "Main" and "Secondary" lists. Powerful operations with two verse lists: Delete all verses, Insert range of verses, Insert results of searches in books, Move selected verses, Copy selected verses, Delete selected verses, Select all verses, Invert selection, Select verses common to both lists, Select verses NOT common to both lists Operations with the verse list are very fast with all (31102) verses of the Bible. |
Hear what you read! | Yes, Davar4 can play (MP3) audio files. A unique feature is the ability to synchronize audio narration with the text displayed in a window. Greek Koine narration (new). This freely available MP3 file (460 MB) was kindly indexed by Karel Vodička - listen to the pronunciation in Greek of any NT verse. |
Bookmarks (new) | You can place 10 important places (references) into the bookmarks. They are visible in the toolbar and quickly navigate to the reference by a single click. Bookmarks are stored in davar.cfg and reloaded on the next start of the program. |
Layouts (new) |
You can store up to 10 layouts of modules and their positions in the main Davar window, e.g. OT study, NT study... etc. Layouts are easy to access from the program menu or the toolbar. Layouts are stored in the davar.cfg file. |
Download and Update manager (new) | The previous version of Library manager was replaced by Download manager and Update manager tabs. Download manager is a very powerful tool that allows you to select and install new modules into Davar4. First, you update the list of all available modules. You can sort the modules in the table according to the date of release, language of module and name+type of module. After selecting the modules for download, you can (optionally) select the server for download. Then, all module files (zipped) are downloaded and unpacked. Update manager works in a similar way, but only with the modules that are already installed. You are notified when new versions of the modules are available. This can easily be updated. |
Study maps, charts, pictures and photos |
The picture browser is a window where you can display any interesting graphical information you wish to study. Pictures can be separated into user-defined classes in a tree. There are hundreds of excellent Pictures, Maps and other Graphics! A Complete Bible atlas is freely available in Davar4! 174 pictures of excellent quality, thanks to Zaine Ridling, PhD. and Access Foundation, Chicago, U.S. |
Linked PDF files and modules (new) | Davar4 uses a tag for PDF reference. It can be used to link module and specific page in a PDF document. It is important, in the case of some scanned books, pictures, etc. Double clicking the PDF reference in a text will synchronize the PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Reader. As an examples, here are two modules: Biblický slovník Adolfa Novotného (Czech) and Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew-English lexicon (unabridged, English+Hebrew) |
Module Development Kit MDK (new) | For experienced users: this set of tools allows one to create all available modules. This process was significantly simplified in Davar4. Now, you only need to create two files. The first file contains only text data (e.g. Bible text), the second file keeps all other additional information. There are a lot of examples and templates and it is relatively easy to adapt them to create yoour own modules for Davar4! |
And much, much more ... ! | Context tip window: which displays references, Strong# and gematrical values Davar4 forum (new) where you can discuss various ideas about this software. |
